CE Childcare Scheme

About CE Childcare Scheme

The Community Employment (CE) Childcare Scheme is a government-funded employment programme designed to help long-term unemployed individuals re-enter the workforce through part-time placements in local childcare settings. Funded by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, it combines practical, hands-on work experience with the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification in Early Childhood Care and Education.

Delivered by DLDC across County Donegal, the programme currently operates across 25 childcare facilities in 22 towns and villages throughout the county, making it one of the most geographically accessible programmes we deliver. Participants gain real workplace experience in a supportive environment while working towards a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 Major Award, giving them a strong foundation for a long-term career in early years education.

To be eligible, you must be over 21, have been unemployed for at least 12 months, and be in receipt of an eligible social welfare payment, including One Parent Family support.

How We Can Help

The CE Childcare Scheme offers more than a placement. It is a structured pathway into a growing and valued profession, combining meaningful daily work with formal qualification support. Our team guides participants from application through to completion, ensuring they have the support they need both in the workplace and in their studies.

Placements are part-time and temporary, designed to fit around the realities of participants’ lives while providing enough structure to build genuine skills and experience. For childcare facilities, the scheme offers additional capacity and the opportunity to support individuals taking their first steps in the sector.

Placements are based in community childcare settings across County Donegal, giving you the chance to develop practical skills in a real working environment while completing your QQI Level 5 or Level 6 qualification in Early Childhood Care and Education. Our supervisors provide ongoing support throughout your placement to ensure you are progressing well and getting the most from the experience. Current vacancies are listed on our Jobs Board.

Community childcare settings across County Donegal can host CE Childcare participants, gaining additional support for their day-to-day operations while contributing to the development of the next generation of early years professionals. Our team manages the coordination and supervision of placements, making the process straightforward for host organisations. If your facility is interested in becoming a host, get in touch with our team to find out more.
